LoL MMR vs LP explained: how ranked works in 2026

GamerOne Editör Ekibi 6 min de lectura

MMR is the hidden rating League of Legends uses to match you with players of a similar level; LP is the League Points total you see on screen. MMR decides how much LP you win or lose per game: if your MMR is above your rank you gain more and lose less, and if it's below your rank it's the other way around. This guide is based on Riot's official support pages from May 2026.

LP shows your rank, MMR shows your real level. The LP you gain per game reflects the gap between the two.

Quick summary: how does LoL ranked work?

  • LP: Reach 100 LP in a division and you move up; there are no anymore.
  • MMR: A hidden matchmaking rating that decides your opponents and LP gains.
  • Placements: 5 games per queue; you can't lose LP and the highest placement is Diamond III.
  • Decay: Only in Diamond and above; once your banked days run out you lose LP every day.
  • Queues: Your Solo/Duo and Flex ranks are completely separate.

How many ranks are there in LoL? Tiers and divisions

League of Legends has 10 tiers. Iron through Diamond are split into four divisions from IV to I; the top three tiers form a single leaderboard.

TierDivisionsHow you get there
IronIV – IPlacements or LP
BronzeIV – I100 LP in division I of the tier below
SilverIV – I100 LP in division I of the tier below
GoldIV – I100 LP in division I of the tier below
PlatinumIV – I100 LP in division I of the tier below
EmeraldIV – I100 LP in division I of the tier below
DiamondIV – I100 LP in Emerald I; placements cap at Diamond III
MasterSingle tier100 LP in Diamond I
GrandmasterSingle tierAt least 400 LP and a regional seat
ChallengerSingle tierAt least 800 LP and a regional seat

Most players sit between Bronze and Gold, so a "low elo" is the game's natural distribution. We explain why the gap between tiers usually comes from decisions in our guide to climbing.

What is LP and how do you earn it?

LP (League Points) shows your progress inside your division. You gain LP when you win and lose it when you lose. Reach 100 LP and you go straight to the next division; were removed.

What happens when you drop a division or tier?

  • If you lose more LP than you have, you drop a division and the rest is taken from there. Riot's example: at 5 LP in Silver III, losing 20 LP puts you in Silver IV with 85 LP.
  • Keep losing at 0 LP in division IV and you drop to division I of the tier below, starting at 25, 50 or 75 LP depending on your MMR.
  • Reaching a new tier gives you a short demotion shield; its length depends on the tier and your MMR.

What is MMR in LoL?

MMR (Matchmaking Rating) is the hidden rating Riot uses to match you. LP is your visible rank; MMR is the system's estimate of your real skill. They don't always line up, and your LP gains change with the gap.

SituationOn a winOn a lossResult
MMR above your rankMore LPLess LPYou climb fast
MMR equal to your rankBalancedBalancedYour rank stays put
MMR below your rankLess LPMore LPYou get "LP drain"

Why are my LP gains so low?

If you gain clearly less LP per win than you lose per loss, your MMR is below your rank. That usually happens after:

  • A long losing streak or a bad start to the season
  • Losing against opponents rated below your rank
  • Coming back after a long break

How do you fix your MMR?

There's no shortcut, but the direction is clear: win consistently.

  • Shrink your pool: Three or four champions across two roles is the fastest way to lift your win rate. Check the tier list for strong picks.
  • Don't queue on tilt: A break after two losses in a row keeps the streak from growing.
  • Review your wins too: MMR rises with consistent wins; finding mistakes in games you won is the cheapest way there.
  • Focus on one queue: Solo/Duo and Flex have separate MMR; playing one doesn't fix the other.

How do placement matches work?

  • You play 5 placement matches in each ranked queue (Solo/Duo and Flex).
  • You can't lose LP during placements; losses still affect your hidden MMR.
  • The highest you can place is Diamond III; you can't place directly into Master or above.
  • Going AFK in a placement match counts as a loss.
  • If you've never played ranked, the first estimate comes from your and Normal Draft MMR, so normal games matter too.

Which ranks have decay?

Decay only affects players in Diamond and above. Every ranked game banks "days"; once your banked days run out, you lose LP every day.

TierDays banked per gameMaximum bankWhen it runs out
Diamond7 days28 days (start with 28)50 LP per day
Master, Grandmaster, Challenger1 day14 days (start with 14)75 LP per day; Master decays to Diamond II

What's the difference between Solo/Duo and Flex?

Solo/DuoFlex
Party sizeSolo or 2 players1, 2, 3 or 5 players (4 can't queue ranked)
Rank and MMRIts ownIts own; doesn't affect Solo/Duo
Placements5 games5 games

Master, Grandmaster and Challenger

Reach 100 LP in Diamond I and you're promoted to Master. According to Riot's 2026 update, Grandmaster needs at least 400 LP and Challenger at least 800 LP, and you also need more LP than the lowest player in that tier in your region. The ladder updates daily; follow the top players on the GamerOne leaderboard.

When does the ranked season reset?

Ranked ladders soft reset every year, so you start the new year a few divisions below your old rank. According to Riot, the highest you can start a new year is Emerald I. Split dates change from year to year, so check the ranked tab in the client for the current schedule.
