LoL draft and counter-pick guide: win the advantage in champion select

GamerOne Editör Ekibi Baca 2 menit

Some games are decided in champion select before you ever reach the loading screen. A good draft won't win the game on its own, but it makes your lane and your teamfights a lot easier. This guide covers the basics of ranked draft and what to keep in mind when you counter-pick.

How does ranked draft work?

  • Ban phase: Each player can ban one champion, for a total of 10 bans per game.
  • Pick order: Blue side picks 1, red side 2, blue side 2, red side 2, blue side 2 and finally red side 1.
  • Trades: Once picks are done, you can trade champions or pick order with your teammates. It's the easiest way to give the counter-pick to the right role.

Safe pick or counter-pick?

If you pick early, you don't know who you'll face. In that case, go for safe champions with few hard counters that work across different matchups. If you pick late, you've already seen your opponent, and that's the moment to counter-pick.

If a teammate whose role comes later is picking earlier than you, offer a pick-order trade. The player who picks after seeing their lane opponent is the one who gets the matchup advantage.

What to look for when you counter-pick

  • The lane matchup: Range difference, trading pattern (long-range poke or sudden all-in) and your opponent's escape tools decide how the lane goes.
  • Team composition: Does your team have someone to stand in front, an ability to start fights, and both physical and magic damage? Thinking only about your lane and leaving the team with one damage type makes itemizing easy for the enemy.
  • Win condition: Is your team strong early or late? Your pick should fit that plan.
  • Your own mastery: A counter you've never played is usually worse than a neutral pick you play well.

Ban strategy

  • Ban the patch's strongest champions or the ones you struggle to play against.
  • Don't ban the champion a teammate said they want to pick.
  • Follow the patch notes: buffs and nerfs change ban priorities.

Build a champion pool

A small pool of 2-3 champions per role is enough. Include a safe champion you can pick early and a counter option for late picks. Mastering a few champions helps you improve faster than trying a different one every game.
